6. Egg, Digital DNA by Adriana Varella and Nilton Maltz

This striking piece of public art is the work of Brazilian artists Adriana Varella and Nilton Maltz and installed at Lytton Plaza in Palo Alto, California, reflecting the city’s status as a center for technology. Standing at a commanding seven feet, the egg-shaped structure is constructed from welded steel, polystyrene bead foam, fiberglass and epoxy resin. The egg’s “shell” is made from recycled circuit boards and decorated with phrases in different languages.

7. Wetware by Jennifer Mathis

Jennifer Mathis created this mixed-media artwork using acrylic paint, Indian ink, polymer clay and recycled computer parts including a keyboard. The painting’s title, Wetware, represents the artist’s interest in computer-related software and hardware interfacing with the human nervous system.

Finally, we present this Electronic Mandala by Hanan Cohen. The artist made the piece as a project the 2008 edition of Geekcon, an annual geek convention held in Israel. Cohen reflects on the creation of the artwork as a meditative drawing from electronic parts. While creating the Electronic Mandala, I have though about what it is to be a geek, felt the geeky atmosphere around me and talked with others about their reaction to the Mandala and the parts I have made it from. Those who approached my table, sent a hand to the tray with the parts, grabbed a handful of discrete parts and smiled with nostalgia, were for me the geekiest. This truly reflects the artistic spirit we can find in all of these examples of fantastic recycled computer part art.

Vexel art is a popular and trendy form of digital art. The word “Vexel” originates from the combination of the words “Vector” and “Pixel”, which are two forms of image-based file types. Vector-based images can be re-sized to larger sizes without losing their original quality, pixel-based images on the other hand, are made up of pixels and if re-sized to larger sizes can lose their original quality.

Vexels are pixel-based designs that look very similar to vector-based art. They’re basically the best form of digital art for making something look as realistic as possible.
A single vexel design could take as long as a few days to finish, sometimes even weeks! This type of design is usually created in an image editing software that has advanced freehand tools, like the pen and pencil tools, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. There’s no doubt how much impact the graphic design industry has on our daily lives. Especially with all the exposure we get from billboard, print and television advertisements. It basically changed the way we view and perceive the planet around us. Graphic designers now have the ability to make people want to buy something simply because the ad they saw captivated their attention. Graphic designer also have the ability to change the way we think about a cause or even get us to believe in a new one.

Graphic design can take various forms; one enormous form is known as typography: the art of arranging letters, type and text to create a graphical masterpiece using popular tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Typography has become very popular, perhaps because it is used everywhere such as advertisements, websites, magazines… etc.

In this post, we showcase a collection of 60 inspiring typography designs that we gathered from DeviantART to give you a little inspiration. Each of these artworks has its own unique style, and has been created by hardworking and creative artists and designers from all around the world.
I’m hoping that you find them as inspirational and entertaining as I did when I first viewed them.

Here’s a deeper look into the new Junkiee website and the new design and coding.

The New Junkiee

Our previous blog had all sorts of content that ranged from freebies to tutorials and more. But we wanted to make Junkiee a place where readers can find something a little more specific like showcases and roundups. Showcase-based articles help you get the inspiration you need to find creative and innovative ideas for your own artworks and designs.
We’ve made Junkiee.net the ultimate online destination for people who are looking for great collections of art, design, and development. And as a bonus, we also offer some freebies and downloads and some tutorials and helpful tips!

Why Redesign?

Most of our previous themes were coded and designed by other great web designers and programmers. This time we decided to design and code a theme that will be exclusive to Junkiee. The new theme was designed and coded by Haneen (Nina) Krimly, the owner of Junkiee.net. This new design is called “11.1.11″ to celebrate this unique day in this new year!

The Design Process

I didn’t want to change the website drastically, because it’s the little things that really matter. She used a basic code structure that is similar to the previous theme. The structure includes a header, a navigation bar, a content area, a sidebar and a footer.
Here is how the first rough draft of the theme looked like.

The entire theme was designed in Adobe Photoshop CS5, using over 100 layers and over 20 layer effects. The whole website was designed in three different Photoshop PSD files.

The Coding Process

The coding was done in Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, in three HTML files and one CSS file. The coding was done in simple HTML and CSS programming languages. I first coded the “index.html” file, then the “comments.html” file and finally the “404.html” file. The “style.css” file was coded simultaneously with the other HTML files.
I also added some CSS3 and HTML5 effects; such as the letterpress text effect that is seen on the main content area, the drop shadow text effect that is seen on the header and footer and the pure CSS image rollovers that are seen on the top social networking links in the header.

The WordPress Integration

After the theme was fully coded in pure HTML and CSS, Nina integrated it into WordPress. I divided each major element into pages for WordPress, such as the header, the index, the sidebar, the footer, the comment and more.
The sidebar elements and widgets are pretty much similar to the previous theme. The footer elements however are completely new. We added a little “About The Junkiee” section, a “Recent Posts” section and a “Flickr Group” section to showcase our readers’ artworks.
