Bokeh Examples, Textures & Create A Perfect Bokeh Effect

For those who aren’t familiar with the term “Bokeh”, it refers to the light circles that appear in some photographs when the focus isn’t on the light itself, therefore they look a little blurred out. Below are some wonderful examples of Bokeh Photography, some great Bokeh textures, and a step-by-step tutorial on how to create the Bokeh effect in Adobe Photoshop.

How To Create The Perfect Bokeh Effect

Step One: Creating the Brush

Create a new document that is 900 X 900 pixels in size with a transparent background.

Go to the Elliptical Marquee Tool and go to the very top-left of your document and Click+Shift+Drag it to the very bottom-right to create a perfect circle (The “Shift” is very important here). Fill it up with a black #000000 color, and then remove the selection.

Go to Bending Options on your “Circle” layer, and adjust your settings so they are the same as the ones below:

Now, in order to make this image a brush, go to Edit/ Define Brush Preset and name it anything you like, I named it Bokeh.

Step Two: The Gradient

Create a new document about 900 X 500 pixels in size, you can change the size if you’d like. Now using the Gradient Tool, fill up the document with a two-color gradient. You can choose any two or even three colors you like, I will be using two colors; Dark Pink: #BE2A62 and Dark Purple: #5E29A5. To fill your document, use Shift+Click+Drag down. Here’s how my document looks like so far.

Step Three: The Bokeh Group

Create a new folder by clicking the “Create Group Tool” at the very bottom of your layer’s display. And call it “Bokeh” (Double click on the name to change it).

Add a new layer to the group, and call it “Bokeh 1“, now go to the Brush Tool and select the brush we made earlier.
Change the brush settings as shown below. Set the color to white #FFFFFF and draw a few circles in “Bokeh 1″, and then go to Filter/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur.

Here’s how my image looks so far.

Create another layer in the group and call it “Bokeh 2″, use the brush a few times, and then right click on the layer and go to Blending Options, and select the Outer Glow option. Change the layer opacity to 50%.

Finally, create a third layer “Bokeh 3″ and draw more circles, open the Blending Options again and select the Outer Glow option. Then duplicate the layer.

Step Four: Add A Little Light

Create a new layer and drag it outside the group, go to your Brush Tool and choose a normal 400 pixel round brush. Select the white color and draw a circle on the right of your image.

Step Five: The Final Product

And there you have it, add a little text, and you’ve got the perfect Bokeh effect using Adobe Photoshop.

The Easy Way To Move A WordPress Blog

To start off, I highly recommend you go to your old WordPress and delete posts, tags, comments, authors or even pages that you no longer need on your new website… The reason for this will be discussed further below.
Now, you need to have WordPress installed on your new site. Then log on to your old WordPress admin, and go to TOOLS >> EXPORT.

Here, you can restrict your WordPress to one or all authors (meaning: Do you want your posts only or do you want posts from all your authors). Then click “Download Export File”, this export file is in WXR format (WordPress extended RSS) which will include all the information needed for your new WordPress to import the old WordPress. Make sure you know where you saved this file, because you will need it later on.

Now log on to your new WordPress admin, and click on TOOLS >> IMPORT >> and choose “WordPress”.

As you can see above, the import file is restricted by a size limit of 12MB, which is why I recommended you delete all the stuff you didn’t need on your new site.

After the file is uploaded, WordPress will give you the option to create new users/ authors of which you have had before. Or you can simply “map to an existing user”, which means all the posts will be mapped to your selected user.
Also, make sure you selected the box that says “download and import file attachments”.

And that’s about it, “Have fun!” with your WordPress (new and old)!

Simple URLs using WordPress

So instead of having a URL that looking like this:
http://something.com/?blah/7856?/
You will have a URL that looks a little like this:
For posts: http://something.com/2009/2/post/
For pages: http://something.com/folder/page/

After you log on to your WP admin, on the dashboard you’ll find a “Settings” link on the left sidebar. Once you click it, on the same sidebar, under Settings you’ll find something called Permalinks.

Click on it, and it will take you to a page and if you read through, it will tell you a little about these Custom URLs or as I like to call them Simple URLs. So here you can basically change your URLs and customize them so that they can look a little more simple.

As you can see above, I have chosen the third setting Month and name which means that my URL will have a month and a post name after my site’s name. But you can choose anything you like. You can also make up your very own setting, all you need to do is select “Custom Structure” where you can manually change the URL’s to whatever suits you. If you need to know some more tags other than those given, just click on the link on the top of the page where it says Number of tags are available, this link will lead you to a WP Codex page which explains more about the tags you can use for your custom URLs.

After you have chosen the setting you want, click on the Save Changes and WP will automatically change ALL your post and page URLs to the setting you have chosen.

Understanding WordPress Pages

Let’s Start With “Adding” A Page

After you log on to your WP admin, on the dashboard you’ll find a Pages link on the left sidebar. Once you click it, it will take to the Pages that you have posted on your WordPress. Now don’t worry if yours was empty, it supposed to be that way, because you haven’t posted any pages before.
Now on the sidebar, you’ll find an Add New link under Pages, click it to add a new page.

Now as you can see, you have many options on your page, here’s what all of them mean.

As it says on the image, this is where you add a title to your page… The URL of the page will be determined from here. For example, I want to create a page called “Contact Me”. So in the space given I will add the title “Contact Me”, note that capitalizing letters won’t effect your URL as for other symbols such as “? ! * % $” and so on.
Now if you have already made your URLs setting to be “simple” as I described on my “Simple URLs” tutorial, then this setting should apply to your pages as well as your posts.
This setting is the same that you have for your posts, you can edit your page content visually or by using HTML”.
These buttons make your editing a little easier, just hover (place your mouse over them) over one of them to know what they are for.
This is simply where you place your page content, you can post text, links, pictures, videos… etc.
This is basically where you can make more settings for your page. For example, you can save your page as a Draft for later use, you can Preview your page the same way other people will view it, you can Schedule your page to be published at a given time, you can also choose to set your page Visibility to be Private or Password Protected.
This button is what you click when you are completely done with your page, when you click this, it makes your page visible to whoever you wish it to be.
Don’t worry if you click this and you forgot to add something you wanted to add, because you can simply Edit your page after it’s been published.
This is a setting is for the Folder Effect that allows you to have Parent Pages and Sub-Pages.
A “Parent Page” acts as a folder to allow other pages to be included within the parent or “Main” page.
For example, you have a page called “Downloads” which includes other pages such as “Brushes”, “Scripts”, “Smiley’s” and so on. So this means that my “Downloads” page is a Parent Page and the other pages are Sub-Pages. This is how my URL will look like:
- For the Parent page: http://mysite.com/downloads/
- For the Sub-page: http://mysite.com/downloads/brushes/
Now to make this Folder Effect work, you can simply leave this option aside if you are creating a Parent page, or you can choose a page from the drop-down list if you are creating a Sub-page. (This list includes all your WP pages)!
Using this setting makes your pages more organized for you and for your visitors. Here’s how my little drop-down list looks like after I made all my pages using the Folder effect. As you can see below, the Parent pages are clear and the Sub-pages are organized right under their Parents.
This is for adding Custom Fields to your page, it’s a little bit more advanced for WP beginners. And hopefully I will make a tutorial about it later on.
Finally, this is for comments, you can either Allow them or Close them.

Now That You Know How To “Add” A Page, Here’s How To “Edit” Them After They Have Been Published

After you log on to your WP admin, on the dashboard you’ll find a Pages link on the left sidebar. Once you click it, it will take to the Pages that you have posted on your WP.

Now on the sidebar, you’ll find an Edit link under Pages, click it to edit an existing page. And you can simply choose a page you want to edit.

When you click on it and it will take to your page. You can simply edit any setting or content you like, and then when you’re done just click Update Page which looks like this.

Now That You Know How To “Create” & “Edit” WordPress Pages, Now I’m Going To Show You How To “Delete” An Unwanted Page
After you log on to your WP admin, on the dashboard you’ll find a Pages link on the left sidebar. Once you click it, it will take to the Pages that you have posted on your WordPress.
This will take you to a list of the pages you have already published before.

Notice that when you hover (place your mouse pointer) over any page, some text will appear under the page title, like this.

Now just click Delete to delete the page you don’t want anymore. Note that once you delete a page, you cannot recover it anymore!

5 Steps To Speed Up Your Computer

It might be slightly different for other operating systems though.
Before we begin with the steps, here are some important notes you might want to consider:
1. Your files and folders will not be deleted or harmed in any way.
2. You are advised to keep your power plugged in when following these steps if you’re using a laptop.
3. It’s highly recommended that you do all of this every couple of months to maintain the speed, performance and memory of your computer.

Step 1: Empty Your Recycle Bin

Many people have more than 3000+ files in their recycle bin! Keeping these files takes up a lot of space in your computer’s memory and it might also affect the speed of your RAM memory (random access memory, is the memory that is used for short times while running any software on your computer).
Always empty your recycle bin! Just look at the icon on your desktop, if the bin was full, simply right-click and choose empty recycle bin.

Step 2: Uninstall Unwanted Or Trial Programs & Software

Sometimes people like to install games or programs that are only trials (trials usually take 30 days). When the trial expires, the game or program are still on your computer even though you’re no longer using it! This can also take up a lot of your computer’s space. To uninstall a program or software, simply go to Control Panel >> Add or remove programs and then just uninstall the programs that you’re not using. If there’s a software that you have not installed yourself, keep it on your system because it usually has something to do with your computer’s hardware devices. For example, if you find a software that looks something like: “WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software”, then you will know that it’s something that deals with your computer’s bluetooth device. If you delete a software like this by accident, you will have to visit your computer’s manufacturing website, they usually offer these software programs free to download, you might need to know your computer’s model or name so that you make sure you’re downloading the right programs.

Step 3: Clean Up Your Memory

When your computer executes your instructions, it uses the memory to save “temporary” files which it will use while it’s working. This means that even though your recycle bin is empty, there are still other unnecessary files all over your computer. To delete those files simply go to Start >> All programs >> Accessories >> System tools >> Disk cleanup.

Something like this will show up, choose the disk you want to clean and click OK. (Note that your files and folders will not be deleted or harmed in any way!) I recommend cleaning all of your disks, one after the other!

Just wait a little while until it calculates all your files and folders (This might take some time if you’ve never done it before!).

Now when this shows up, just make sure there’s a little green “check” sign is next to everything, if it’s not, simply check them all. Now click OK and then click Yes! Again, don’t worry about your files, they won’t be deleted!!

Step 4: Check Your System For Errors

Sometimes viruses and computer errors can cause your computer to slow down… In this case, you need to check your system for errors.

Go to My computer >> Then right-click on your drive C >> choose Properties.

Choose Tools >> Check now.

Make sure that both items are checked!! And then click Start. Sometimes, it requires you to restart your computer and when it’s restarting a black and white screen will appear, just don’t click anything until it’s done checking your system for errors!

Now if you suspect that you have a virus on your computer, then having an anti-virus software could come in hand. Most computers come with an anti-virus software, but if you don’t have one, simply use Symantec.Com to get one for your computer.

Step 5: Disk Defragmenter

When you save an image or a file on your computer, the system saves them in the first available space on your memory, causing many unrelated files to squeeze in together! This “disk fragmentation” causes your system to slow down dramatically, and you need to de-fragment your disk!
To do that, go to Start >> All programs >> Accessories >> System tools >> Disk Defragmenter.

Just choose the disk you want to defragment and click Defragment… Again, I recommend repeating this to all your disks!

And There You Have It

After doing all of the above, your computer should be looking pretty good in it’s speed and performance. It should also empty some of your memory, which is always a good thing to have. If for some reason your computer was still very slow, you might need to format your entire PC, but these 5 steps usually give great results for your computer.
